Dear Viki
Pedigree is "tasty" due to salt in the food. We can't say the food is bad la, but for Pedigree it is a super market brand. They are the only ones who made an effort to advertise on TV and through the media. Surprisingly, at a market survey of my marketing project during my degree course, Pedigree is the most popular brand and consumed by many dogs across the country. Often Pedigree are given to dogs with no skin allergies.
Like STluver said, it contains a high amount of by-products, in fact reputable brand claimed to be used by vets also had alot of by-products within. Biscotti and many other tibits and treats for our dogs are often mgfr. from by products. Beware of labels that goes: ONLY FOR PET CONSUMPTION, or NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION. These are often the unwanted stock that had been cleared from market areas and made into food for dogs. Human grade is often regard as a better for them.
The few very good brands that I know of is Nutro and Solid Gold. However I am switching my dog to home cook and Nutro as Solid Gold causes all the black pigments for my dog. It looks too obvious. Since I stop SG, the pigments became lighter.
Abady is not bad but it is protein based. Think I don't want my dog to take that.
Just give yourself time to read through the ingredients on the package and look carefully for preservatives such as BHA and BHT. Cancerous to our dogs.
I know you want the best for him too.

I agree with evo! not all dogs can take in the same brand as others, like evo have to drop SG becos it is not suitable for the furkid. So maybe you can sample out 1st before buying it.
For Solid Gold samples, you can go to sundreams pet land at far east shopping centre, #02-24 ( they are going to shift to 1st level somewhere in mid may), tel: 62249944. They have a wide range of SG and doggyman products. Kato-san and his assistant are very nice and helpful pple, you can ask them questions abt food and diet.

Just to share my experience...
When Jubilee first came home, we didn't know what brand to feed so got her Purina PuppyChow. Then was recommended Eukanuba so she went on Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy with very good results, beautiful coat, strong body, happy to eat. (But labs are rarely fussy!)
Then, found out that by-products not gd for dogs and saw that listed in the ingredient list of Eukanuba so got EaglePack Holistique. Horrible experience cos' my dog started hating her food, got "pimples" on her back, coat condition deteoriated, poo-poo softsoft. We also notice she had rashes on her underbelly and then so happened, she sprained herself and all this happened with EaglePack so we switched back to Eukanuba and now she's happier and healthier! She loves it.
I think it depends on ur doggy. Each dog thrives differently on different things I think. Did want to switch to try SG but after that unfortunate switch, rather adopt the "if it ain't broken, why fix it?" approach. That reminds me that I shd go and get some samples of SG for her try anyway...hmmm...just in case she might do even better on it.
By the way, I read up abt it and apparently by-products refer to the intestines and less commonly eaten parts of the animal (eg. chicken), not chicken feathers and all. That is the stipulation regulated by the AAFCO (or something like that..based in USA). Also not all by-products are bad for dogs just that sometimes, they may lack the required protein or something...

tat quite true, lamb is good for dogs like shihtzu as they are prone to skin disease very easily, so i actually feeding my boi with SG lamb meal and occasionally give him meat like chicken or beef, btw, for rice, you should feed dog with brown rice as they have less sugar content than the normal rice. Lex was on sg b4 but than allergic to the food, now change to canidea n doing well. I would say most of the dogs loves pedigree coz it's like macdonald to them and why was it so popular to owner? My opion it's because of the price, I would say it's cheap.
